Recommended setup

This server runs on your machine. The publisher's guide has the exact command and settings for your client.

Tip

Shopify recommends installing the AI Toolkit as a plugin, which updates automatically; the MCP server is the alternative for people who prefer MCP.

Overview

Shopify's Dev MCP server is one of three ways to install Shopify's AI Toolkit, alongside plugins and agent skills, and it is the route for people who prefer MCP. It runs locally with npx and needs no authentication. It is aimed at developers building on Shopify rather than at running a store through the MCP server itself: Shopify says the toolkit points an agent at current developer documentation and API schemas and can check GraphQL, Liquid and extension code against them. Shopify's page recommends the plugin install first, so this entry fits clients where a plugin is not an option.

What it can do

  • Connects an agent to Shopify's developer docs and API schemas so it can work from current reference material.
  • The toolkit this server belongs to validates GraphQL queries, Liquid templates and Shopify Extensions against Shopify schemas.
  • Runs locally with npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest, and Shopify lists setup steps for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code and Antigravity CLI.

What you need

Sign-in and credentials

No authentication. The server runs locally, does not need an account and, like the rest of Shopify's toolkit, needs Node.js 18 or higher.

Why is this labelled Official?

Documented on shopify.dev, Shopify's developer documentation, in the Shopify AI Toolkit page, which gives the install command npx -y @shopify/dev-mcp@latest (read 2026-10-31). The npm package @shopify/dev-mcp lists a shopify-admin account among its maintainers (npm registry, read 2026-10-31). No MCP Registry entry and no public repository were found for it.

Listing on HistChat is not an endorsement or a security review. MCP servers can access data or perform actions, so review the source and permissions before connecting.
