Connect PostHog

Recommended setup

Remote

PostHog's wizard (npx @posthog/wizard mcp add) installs the server into supported editors and agents.

Before you connect

The agent can write to your project. PostHog warns about prompt injection and suggests reviewing tool calls, restricting the session to read-only tools, or pinning it to one organization or project.

Overview

PostHog's MCP server is a hosted endpoint at mcp.posthog.com/mcp that lets an assistant work with a PostHog project: run HogQL and analytics queries, ship feature flags and experiments, dig into error stack traces and triage them, and more. OAuth is the recommended sign-in, with a personal API key as the fallback for clients without OAuth, and PostHog routes you to your US or EU region automatically. Connecting and calling tools is free, though some AI-powered tools use LLMs internally and may bill as PostHog AI spend. The server applies its own rate limits per credential.

What it can do

  • Runs analytics and HogQL queries, manages feature flags and experiments, and triages errors, with a tools reference that groups the tools by category.
  • A session can be limited to read-only tools through the x-posthog-read-only header or the readonly query parameter, and filtered by tool or feature category.
  • A connection can be pinned to one organization or project, which also removes the tools that switch context.

What you need

Sign-in and credentials

OAuth is the recommended route. For clients without OAuth, create a personal API key with the MCP Server preset and send it as a bearer token.

Request headers

The hosted endpoint asks for these headers.

Why is this labelled Official?

Registry name io.github.PostHog/mcp. The registry only lets an organization's owners publish under its io.github.<org> namespace (registry authentication docs, read 2026-10-30). The repository is PostHog/posthog (services/mcp), and PostHog's own documentation at posthog.com/docs/model-context-protocol describes the hosted server and links that source (read 2026-10-31).

Listing on HistChat is not an endorsement or a security review. MCP servers can access data or perform actions, so review the source and permissions before connecting.
