Guide

How to convert an AI conversation to Markdown

  1. Select and copy the conversation from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Grok.
  2. Paste it into the box above and pick the provider it came from, or leave Auto / Generic.
  3. Add a title if you want one. It becomes the top heading and the file name.
  4. Check the Markdown on the right, then choose Copy Markdown or Download .md.

The output updates as you type. Nothing is uploaded: the page converts the text in your browser and keeps it only until you reload.

What the converter does, and what it leaves alone

This is a formatter, not an AI. It only acts on things it can identify with confidence, and it passes everything else through unchanged.

What the converter changes and what it preserves
It doesIt never does
Turns explicit labels such as User:, You:, Human:, Assistant:, ChatGPT:, Claude:, Gemini: and Grok: into speaker headings.Guess a speaker from ordinary prose, or read labels inside a fenced code block.
Collapses runs of blank lines and trims the edges of each message.Change your wording, escape characters or re-wrap valid Markdown such as lists, tables, quotes and links.
Removes whole lines that are copy-button labels, like Copy code, or a trailing run of two or more of them.Delete a sentence that happens to contain a word like “Copy”, or touch anything inside a code block.

Copying from a chat app often drops formatting such as bold text, tables and code fences. The converter cannot bring back what the copy no longer contains. If no speaker labels are found, you get your text back as one clean body.

ChatGPT to Markdown

Copy a ChatGPT conversation and paste it above. Depending on how you copy, the text can include “You said:” and “ChatGPT said:” lines before each message. Choose ChatGPT and these become ## You and ## ChatGPT headings, with or without the colon. Choosing ChatGPT also removes the “ChatGPT can make mistakes” footer line. A leftover Copy code line from a code block header is removed whichever provider you pick.

Claude to Markdown

Text copied from a single Claude reply usually has no speaker labels, so it is kept as one Markdown body with its formatting intact. Transcripts written as Human: and Assistant: turns, which is common in logs and notes, are split into headings. A trailing run of two or more button lines such as Copy, Retry and Edit under a reply is removed in every mode, and selecting Claude also removes the “Claude can make mistakes” footer line.

Gemini to Markdown

Gemini pages can put short “You said” and “Gemini said” lines without a colon above each message. Auto / Generic only trusts a colon, so pick Gemini to recognise the colon-free form. Two or more action lines in a row after a reply, such as Good response and Bad response, are removed in every mode; selecting Gemini adds Gemini-only ones such as Show drafts and Share & export, plus the “Gemini can make mistakes” footer line.

Grok to Markdown

Grok conversations convert through the generic rules: explicit User: and Grok: labels become headings, and a pasted reply with no labels stays one body. There is no Grok-specific cleanup beyond that, so check the result if your copy includes extra interface text.

Why save AI conversations as Markdown?

  • Portable plain text. A .md file opens in any editor and will still open in ten years.
  • Works with Git. Markdown diffs cleanly, so a conversation can live next to the code it produced.
  • Notes apps. Obsidian, Notion imports and most note tools read Markdown directly.
  • Documentation. Turn a useful answer into a README section or an internal doc.
  • Easy archival and reuse. Plain text is searchable, and it is simple to paste back into an AI chat as context.

Frequently asked questions

Can I convert a ChatGPT conversation to Markdown?
Yes. Copy the conversation from ChatGPT, paste it into the box and choose ChatGPT. If your copy contains lines such as “You said:” and “ChatGPT said:”, they become speaker headings. If it contains no labels, the text is kept as one clean Markdown body.
Does this work with Claude?
Yes. It recognises Human: and Assistant: style labels, plus the User: and Claude: labels, and removes a trailing run of copy-button lines such as Copy and Retry. Text copied from a single reply usually has no labels, so it stays as one body.
Does it support Gemini and Grok?
Yes, with the same approach. For Gemini it also recognises “You said” and “Gemini said” lines that have no colon. For Grok it recognises User: and Grok: labels. Anything it cannot identify with confidence is left as you pasted it, apart from tidied blank lines.
Is my conversation uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser. What you paste is not sent to HistChat, not stored, not placed in the page address and not included in analytics. It disappears when you reload or close the page.
Does it preserve code blocks?
Yes. Fenced code blocks, their language names, indentation and blank lines are kept exactly, and nothing inside a fence is treated as a speaker label or cleaned up. It cannot restore a fence that your copy already lost: code that was pasted as plain text stays plain text.
Does it rewrite or summarise my conversation?
No. It is a formatter, not an AI. It adds speaker headings, tidies blank lines and removes a few obvious interface lines. It does not change your wording, and it uses no AI model.
Can I download the result as a .md file?
Yes. Download .md saves the Markdown to your device. The file name comes from your title (for example postgresql-pagination.md), or ai-conversation.md if you leave the title empty.
Why use Markdown instead of PDF?
Markdown is plain text, so it opens anywhere, searches well, diffs cleanly in Git and drops straight into notes apps and documentation. A PDF is better when you need a fixed layout to print or send to someone.
