Recommended setup

Remote · Local

Perplexity recommends its hosted endpoint, while the registry lists only the local npm package.

Setup note

The OAuth sign-in asks which API organization to bill, so usage is tied to Perplexity API billing rather than a chat subscription.

Overview

Perplexity offers its search and reasoning tools to assistants in two forms. The hosted server at api.perplexity.ai/mcp is the one the documentation recommends: sign in with a Perplexity account through OAuth, or send an API key as a bearer token. The registered package, @perplexity-ai/mcp-server, is the open-source local alternative for clients that only run stdio servers, and it needs PERPLEXITY_API_KEY. Both are meant to expose the same tools for search, questions, research and reasoning, though Perplexity notes that transport, authentication and release timing can differ between them.

What it can do

  • Exposes perplexity_search, perplexity_ask, perplexity_research and perplexity_reason.
  • The hosted server uses Streamable HTTP and works with clients that support remote servers; the local server runs over stdio.
  • An Agent Plugins declaration in the open-source repository covers clients that install plugins.

What you need

Sign-in and credentials

OAuth sign-in with a Perplexity account, or an API key sent as a bearer token. The local server reads PERPLEXITY_API_KEY from its environment.
